What is Reiki? Is it the one with stones? By Chia Oh, Reiki Master Teacher and Hypnotherapist

When people learn that I am a ‘Reiki Master’, I’m frequently asked, ‘What is Reiki?’ and ‘Is it the therapy with stones?’ Let me clarify: Reiki harnesses the healing power of a Reiki Healer’s hands—no stones are involved (that’s ‘hot stones therapy’).

To me, Reiki is a profoundly positive energy that brings about transformative changes on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. It originates from Japan and is known as ‘universal life force energy,’ representing an ancient form of energy healing. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Tendai Buddhist, rediscovered Reiki while meditating at Mount Kurama. He began channeling Reiki, facilitating healing in others, and passed this ability down to Reiki Masters, leading to its global dissemination.

Reiki is channeled by a Reiki healer, usually through their hands. The healer would place their hands above or on the body, applying the energy. While it might seem far-fetched, when you consider that we are all made up of energy, Reiki’s high-vibrational energy can penetrate all our energy fields, addressing mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Reiki healing is invaluable for relaxation, stress reduction, and promoting healing across physical, emotional, and spiritual realms. My favorite aspect of Reiki is its ability to foster a positive and calm mindset, leading to increased happiness and inner peace. During a Reiki session, the energy works on our energy centers, known as chakras. We each have seven major chakras, each associated with different parts of the body and emotional well-being. For example, the heart chakra in the center of the body is linked to the heart, lungs, thymus, love, compassion, self-acceptance, and relationships.

What sets Reiki apart is its safety, non-invasiveness, and intuitive nature. Recipients need not share specific issues; Reiki intuitively addresses areas in need of healing. Whether you’re experiencing work stress, a relationship breakup, or any other challenge, Reiki works for your highest good. It’s accessible to everyone, whether deeply immersed in healing therapies or just curious about energy work.
